GCHS Just Released Two Local History Publications
The Squirrel Hunters of Geauga: The County’s Role in Ohio’s Civil War Minutemen, relates the local response to the statewide call for men to defend Cincinnati from a feared Rebel invasion in 1862. The second book, released in October 2018 and titled The Rebellion Begins: Geauga County in the First Months of the Civil War, captures the county’s overnight transition from a place of anxious calm to a place dominated by the tribulations of war. It addresses the spring and summer of 1861. These books represent the first of several publications that are intended to tell the extensive story of Geauga County in the War Between the States.
All of these books may be purchased at the Crossroads Store on the grounds of Century Village Museum in Burton, Ohio. Each book provides a window into Geauga County’s past and each conveys why this location is an interesting and often remarkable place to live. These books would be great holiday gifts for folks who enjoy history and have a desire to know more about this area’s early growth and development.
